New Patriotic Party Communications Director Yaw Buaben Asamoa has described the recent intermittent power outages in the country as “different” from the era of former President John Mahama.
According to him, the infrastructure of the transmission lines has come under great pressure, hence the reasons for the cuts.
Speaking on JoyNews’ NewsFile program, Yaw Buaben Asamoa urged citizens to be patient with government and energy sector players as they find viable means to solve the problem.
“This ‘tipper’ is a different kind of ‘tipper.’ We must accept it and move on because the transmission infrastructure has come under great pressure. It is important that we accept that there is a problem and that the problem is going to be worked on, ”said the communications director.
Benjamin Boakye, Executive Director of the African Center for Energy Policy, called for critical attention to be paid to the indebtedness incurred with power transmission and distribution companies such as the Ghana Grid Company Limited and the Electricity Company of Ghana.
“The debt with GRIDCo has been getting worse over the years and it is important that we pay special attention to it. If the government continues to use the electricity sector to play politics, then we will be in this situation for a long time. We need a comprehensive strategic look at our energy sector, ”warned Boakye.
For almost 3 years, starting in 2015, Ghana experienced a persistent and spotty energy crisis.
This was due to the shortage of electricity supply of the transmission and distribution companies.
Ghana at that time had a power generation capacity of only 400-600 megawatts, a figure that was less than what the country needs and this resulted in a long-standing load reduction exercise across the country.
