As of today, April 1, 2021, the Ghana Card replaces the Individual Taxpayer Identification Number issued by the Ghana Revenue Authority for tax identification purposes.

This change is in line with the government’s policy on the use of a unique identifier for all transactions where identification of an individual is required.

To ensure a smooth implementation of this initiative, the GRA in a statement said that registration officials from the National Identification Authority are currently in 14 GRA offices across the country to register people who do not possess a card from Ghana.

They include the General Registration Department in Accra, the Taxpayer Service Center in Adabraka – Accra, the Taxpayer Service Center in Asokwa in Kumasi, the Taxpayer Service Center in Wa and the Taxpayer Service Center in Cape Coast.

However, NIA registration officials will eventually be stationed at 63 other GRA locations to serve all taxpayers.

The statement also said there will be a transition period starting April 1.S t, 2021 to December 31, 2021, where both the TIN and the Ghana card PIN can be used simultaneously as a unique number for tax identification purposes.

After this period, all existing TINs are expected to be replaced by the Ghana card PIN.

A self-service portal has also been made available on the GRA website for existing taxpayers who have registered and been issued a Ghana card to link their Ghana card PIN to their TIN.

Also, any taxpayer with a Ghana card must present it to any GRA office to register as a taxpayer.

The GRA concluded by saying that for transactions such as filing returns, paying taxes, merchandise clearing, and business registration, the Ghana card PIN must be listed on the application forms, returns and attachments, which support transactions.
