A circuit court in Accra on Friday sentenced two people to 18 years in prison each on the charges of conspiracy and robbery.

The court chaired by Ms Priscilla Dapaah Mireku found them guilty of the charges against them after the trial.

Chief Inspector Denis Terkpertey, the prosecutor, said the complainant, Mathew Norgbetey, is a taxi driver who resides in Sakumono, while Koomson resides in Tema Newtown.

The prosecution said that on November 21, 2018, at approximately 0200 hours, the complainant, while operating his car, was hired by Koomson and Nyarko from a place known as Shallom in Lashibi to Tema Newtown, Bankuman.

The Prosecutor’s Office said that upon arriving at a place in Bankuman, near a Church building, the convicts asked the complainant to stop so they could get off, so he agreed.
The prosecution said Nyarko quickly got out and leaned over the driver’s door to prevent the complainant from getting out of the car.

According to the indictment, Koomson also pretended to be taking money out of his pocket to pay the whistleblower.

He said Koomson, however, pulled a knife out of his pocket and ordered the whistleblower to give him all of his money, and out of fear, the whistleblower gave up his sales totaling GHC270 and the two were fired.

The prosecution said that on November 25, 2018, at approximately 1:30 p.m., the applicant was at work at the Shallom Spot taxi rank when Koomson and Nyarko arrived asking for fuel to run his motorcycle.

He said that the whistleblower, upon seeing them, raised the alarm and with the help of some drivers, Nyarko was arrested but Koomson escaped.

The prosecution said investigations revealed that Koomson and Nyarko were arrested by the Police Patrol team on November 23, 2018 at approximately 1:00 a.m. for possession of offensive weapons, namely two knives and a metal bar. .

According to the prosecution, they were granted bail for police investigation on November 25, 2018, but when the two reported to the police five days later, they were arrested again for robbing the complainant.
