France coach Didier Deschamps was frank about the reasoning behind his replacement of Kylian Mbappé against Ukraine.
Les Bleues could only draw against their tenacious opponents in their 2022 World Cup qualifier on Wednesday, and Mbappé retired in the 77th minute when his team chased after a winner.
Deschamps explained why at the post-match press conference.
“He knew himself that he was not playing well,” he said.
It was not the result that France wanted when starting their campaign to arrive in Qatar next year.
As defending champions and with such a strong team, they were certainly expected to part ways with Andriy Shevchenko’s team, but despite going ahead through Antoine Griezmann, they were tied via an own goal from Presnel Kimpembe.
Ukraine’s keeping Mbappe so quiet seemed to be rooted in their system, and Shevchenko later admitted that they had devised a specific tactical approach to counter the threat from the Paris Saint-Germain forward.
France will face Kazakhstan in their next qualifying match on Sunday, and Deschamps and Mbappé will likely use some of that time to reflect on what went wrong against Ukraine.
