Manchester United remain committed to handing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a new contract and the Norwegian’s future does not hinge on lifting a trophy this season, sources told ESPN.
United have yet to win any trophies with Solskjaer and saw another missed opportunity when they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Leicester City before the international break.

After tying Spanish Granada in the quarterfinals, they are still on the hunt for the Europa League, but sources have told ESPN that Solskjaer does not have to win the competition to get a new contract.
The 48-year-old signed a three-year contract when he became permanent manager in March 2019 and will enter his senior year in the summer.
United bosses believe they have already seen enough progress, both on and off the pitch, to justify offering Solskjaer a new contract.
Both sides are relaxed about the situation, although the club is aware that allowing Solskjaer to go too far in his senior year could cause an unwanted distraction.
United are already planning a long-term future with Solskjaer, who was consulted on the decision to appoint John Murtough as football director and Darren Fletcher as technical director. Solskjaer’s relationship with Murtough and Fletcher was instrumental in both getting the jobs.
During the process, Solskjaer was also assured that he retains the title of coach rather than head coach and still has a key role in recruiting players, including one of only two vetoes. The other is in charge of the recruiting department.
Solskjaer has overseen constant improvement in the field. United finished sixth in the Premier League in 2018-19 and last season finished third to earn a comeback to the Champions League. With nine games to go this season, United are second and ready to secure back-to-back results in the top four for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.
