Gary Neville has been “demoralized” after Manchester United crashed in the FA Cup against Leicester.

Former Manchester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho continued his fine form in front of the Foxes’ goal with a double when Youri Tielemens scored the group’s selection to knock the Red Devils out of competition in the quarterfinal stage.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named a very different-looking team after returning from Italy, where they beat AC Milan in the knockout rounds of the Europa League.

Neville admitted that he was surprised by the number of changes that were made before the tie and feels that Solskjaer missed a good opportunity to win a trophy.

“It’s been a good week, it’s no wonder they go to Milan and do what they did because they are well away from home,” he told Gary Neville’s podcast with Sky Sports.

‘Beating West Ham last week, and then I’m surprised the team has rotated so much.

‘I know you’ve been doing that, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but this was a real opportunity. You think about the semi-final draw that occurred at halftime of that game, which meant that the winner played against Southampton.

“It’s not a stunt against Southampton in the semi-final by any stretch of the imagination, but what an opportunity. And I think I think that group of players needs to win a trophy with Solskjaer.

‘Yes of course finishing second would be the priority at the start of the season and winning a trophy now will be the priority with that, they only have the Europa League left, but that was a very good one today.

‘They have a decent record at Leicester and I was in the car listening to the game and I backed up and thought’ here we go ‘, I’m not surprised United are away from home, but then that second and third place come in and it’s a missed opportunity.’

Neville also admitted that the loss at King Power has left him feeling “demoralized” as United’s search for cutlery with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has taken another step back.

“I’m a bit demoralized tonight as a United fan because I feel like it was a very good season for this season.”

And if you want to catch Manchester City, you have to beat them. I have to beat them in the great game and in a great competition.

“Spurs have that opportunity in a few weeks in a final and if Manchester City is going to be in a final, I know they have Chelsea, then Manchester United has to be there to stop them.

‘You can’t trust other teams to stop them if you’re the second best team in the country. If you have a decent average record against City, which United have with Solskjaer, then you should be the one to stop it.

“If you think back to 1999, when Arsenal won the double last year, we were the only team that could stop them in the semi-final and we stopped them, I worked hard, but we stopped them.

‘Same in the league, you can’t wait for other teams to stop them for you, if you want to catch teams you have to leave them one and I’m disappointed with that tonight.

“I think United fans are disappointed, I’ve seen the reaction on social media.”
