The Mexican international is entering his final year in Major League Soccer with Los Angeles FC and admits that Zlatan was at his best.
Carlos Vela and Zlatan Ibrahimovic created one of the most entertaining rivalries in Major League Soccer between 2018 and 2019. Whenever Los Angeles FC and LA Galaxy face off, both players always put on a show scoring goals or giving assists.
Carlos Vela is entering his fourth year with LAFC and last season was the first time he did not face Ibrahimovic in MLS and admitted missing the rivalry with the Swedish forward. LAFC began its preseason earlier this month and will have its first home game against Austin FC on April 17 at Banc of California Stadium.
“Zlatan brought out the best in me”
“I think in the end it’s good to play against world class players because it brings out the best in you, well in my case it did. I was lucky enough to face Zlatan for two seasons here in MLS, fighting head to head and in the end I won all the individual titles. This year I have to look for new goals and rivals, “said Carlos Vela during an interview with ESPN during Media Day 2021.
In 2019 Carlos Vela had one of his best years in his career because he broke all individual records in the history of Major League Soccer. The LAFC captain scored 34 goals during the regular season and had 15 assists. That year he won the Golden Boot and the Most Valuable Player of Major League Soccer 2019.
