Colchester Midfielder Kwame Poku Reportedly Retired From Black Stars Team Following Backlash – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

Local media are reporting that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) removed Kwame Afriyie Poku from the Black Stars team for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after his inclusion was heavily criticized.

Poku, who plays for England’s fourth division Colchester, was included in Charles Akonnor’s 29-man squad for games against South Africa and Sao Tome and Principe later this month.

The 19-year-old’s selection surprised the Ghanaians, who criticized the Black Stars’ technical managers for snubbing Ghanaian Premier League players over a player playing in a lower league in England.

It is rumored that Akonnor presented his team to the GFA without the young man, but the association invited Poku to ensure its international future. Poku was born in England to Ghanaian parents.

The decision has failed, and the GFA has been forced to remove Poku from the team. Instead, Poku has been drafted into the local Black Stars team for the friendly against Uzbekistan next week.

Opoku has scored one and has assisted three goals in 35 appearances in all competitions this season.

The Black Stars face South Africa in Johannesburg on March 25 and host Sao Tome and Principe in Accra three days later. Akonnor’s team needs a point to seal qualification to the Cameroon tournament next year.
