Roman Abramovich has vowed to keep winning trophies at Chelsea with a warning to his coaches that this is how they will always be judged.
In a rare interview with Forbes magazine, Abramovich enthusiastically reflected on his 18 years since he bought the London club.
She spoke of fulfilling the ambitions of creating world-class teams, including the successful women’s team and prolific academy, and of fighting discrimination and having a positive impact on the club’s communities.
Abramovich said: ‘I think the trophies speak for themselves and show what we as a club have been able to achieve over these years, and my goal is to continue to win trophies in the future and build for the future.
“Chelsea have a very rich history and I feel very fortunate to be able to participate in that. The club was here before me, and it will be here after me, but my job is to ensure that we are as successful as possible today, as well as to build for the future. ”
Regarding the rapid turnover of managers, he added: ‘I think we are pragmatic in our choices. And we feel comfortable making the right changes at the right time to ensure that we can achieve our long-term ambitions.
‘I hope it also says something about the clarity of the club’s long-term ambition. Those who join understand the goals both on the field and the broader positive role the club plays in the community. ”
Abramovich has employed 13 different coaches in his 18 years at the helm, and in January he fired club legend Frank Lampard from the job and appointed Thomas Tuchel, who has yet to lose a game.
His only regret seems to be the extra attention. “In hindsight, especially with the public profile it would bring me, maybe I would have thought differently about owning a club,” Abramovich said. “At that point, I just watched this amazing game and wanted to be a part of it in one way or another.”
Reflecting on his decision to enter the soccer world 18 years ago, Abramovich revealed that it was attending games while traveling on business that first caught his eye.
And it was a move into sport and into the Premier League that shifted the balance of power in England’s game and made Chelsea a major competitor for players like Manchester United and Arsenal.
‘There was so much emotion, so much emotion. I remember thinking, ‘I want to be a part of this,’ Abramovich said.
“The fact that there is no set formula for winning football games: a coach and his team must consider many factors when approaching each game.
“It is as if every few days there is a new exam and the work you have done is evaluated. I enjoyed, and still do, the unpredictability and watching each game unfold. ‘
