The Minister of Youth and Sports, the Honorable Mustapha Ussif, urged the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and other sports federations in the country to start preparing for 2023 as it marks a “crucial” national project for the country.
He wants federations to get to the grassroots now and find more talent and prepare them for the task ahead.
Addressing the GOC General Assembly on Monday, moments before the election of the Committees, Hon Ussif said that the GOC and the various federations represent great allies for the Government.
“Whatever we do as a government, GOC, Associations or Federations, the ultimate goal of all of us is to develop our sports and represent our beloved country well in international competitions, especially the Olympic Games, the Commonwealth and the African Games,” he said. .
“A success at the Africa Games in 2023 also means that our athletes in various sports disciplines are doing very well at home. That is why the preparation to achieve this must start now, going back to the grassroots, to find more talents and prepare them for the task ahead.
“The Africa Games 2023 offer our country a unique opportunity to revitalize all aspects of our sports, including the development, promotion and active organization of competitions, especially at the lower levels to discover more talents.”
Ghana will host the thirteenth edition of the African Games on dates yet to be confirmed.
However, the government has promised to build a new stadium with a capacity for 50,000 spectators. None of Ghana’s sports stadiums meet the standard required for the Continental Games.
According to the minister, he will soon meet with the various stakeholders to “chart the best way forward.”
“There are other key areas of our sports development, such as financing and infrastructure maintenance, that in the coming days I will engage stakeholders to share our plans and chart the best way forward,” he said.
“We can advance Ghana’s sport and achieve a lot if we come together and collaborate effectively as stakeholders.”
On Monday, the Colombian government went to the polls to elect new executives for another four-year term, from which incumbent president Ben Nunoo Mensah emerged victorious.
Ben Nunoo Mensah, former president of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation, got 35 votes to beat the former secretary general of the Government of China, Akpokavie, who accumulated 28 votes.
