Atlético de Madrid are currently chasing their first LaLiga title since 2013-14, and a win over Real Madrid in Sunday’s derby could put them on the road to victory.
Atlético de Madrid is the closest they have come to a LaLiga title since lifting the trophy for the last time in 2014.

The five-point gap is too small for Simeone’s comfort. Although undoubtedly the Argentine coach would have overcome that gap of five points the two greats at this point in the season had asked him back in September.
Atlético, with 24 games played, also have a one-game lead over their two title rivals. And a rare win against Los Blancos in Sunday’s Madrid derby could be decisive for Atlético’s title hopes, perhaps giving them the psychological advantage they will need to lead them to their second LaLiga title of the 21st century. Although Simeone, and his title-seeking counterparts Zinedine Zidane and Ronald Koeman, will no doubt reiterate that there is still a long way to go regardless of the results of this weekend’s league action.
How many LaLiga titles has Atlético won?
If Altético make it to the end in 2020-21, it will be the club’s eleventh LaLiga title in its 117-year history. With their current tally of 10 league titles, Atlético is third in the LaLiga standings behind Real Madrid with 34 titles and Barcelona with 26.
Atlético’s first Liga title was won in the 1939-40 season, and the club retained the LaLiga trophy in the 1940-41. The Madrid team’s third championship came nine years later, in 1949-50, and the club again managed to retain the title in 1950-51.
Los Rojiblancos had to wait 14 years for their fifth title in 1965-66, four years after their historic win at the Recopa de Europa in 1961-62. The next five titles came in 1969–70, 1972–73, 1976–77, 1995–96, and 2013–14.

In the event that Atlético’s name is engraved on the LaLiga trophy at the end of this season, Argentine coach Diego Simeone will become one of three coaches to win two league titles for the club, and the first in seven decades.
