Manchester City has donated hundreds of laptops to schools in a big-hearted move inspired by the Mail Force’s Computers for Kids campaign.
Runaway Premier League leaders have targeted local children who live in some of the most deprived areas of the country. The club is understood to have spent a six-figure sum to make sure they can connect.
Captain Fernandinho praised our campaign, which has already raised a staggering £ 10.8 million to help underprivileged pupils.
“At City, we are proud to have a strong and lasting connection with our Manchester community and, in particular, with the youth of our city,” he said.
“However, the pandemic has meant that we have had to find different ways to reach those in our neighborhood and the Computers for Kids campaign is a very good way to do that.”
The Brazilian midfielder, a key figure in Pep Guardiola’s side march to the top of the table, added: ‘As a father of two, I can see first-hand the importance of technology to keep our young people connected. But I am also aware that on our doorstep, there are many who simply do not have access to this type of equipment. ‘
Hundreds of specially created packages will be sent next week from the Etihad Stadium to young people in 13 primary and secondary schools in East Manchester and beyond.
Packages include Dell laptops, with EE data packages so kids can connect directly no matter if they have Wi-Fi at home.
In another big-hearted move, the city’s IT team is spending their time helping with the setup of a project worth a total of £ 100,000.
The donation will help hundreds more children on the wrong side of the ‘digital divide’.
On Thursday, the Mail Force oversaw a shipment of more than 5,000 devices to schools in more than 100 towns and villages in a campaign backed by each of the six living prime ministers.
Janice Allen, principal of Falinge Park High School in Rochdale, which is one of the recipients, highlighted the importance of the city’s donation.
“Access to laptops is a great challenge for our students, not only when they have to study from home but also when they return to the classroom,” he explained.
“This donation will make a huge difference in our students’ access to education.”
Greg Swimer, CTO of City Football Group, said: “Although our local children face a number of barriers to learning in today’s climate, we did not want technology to be one of them.”
