A total of 69,820 people have been vaccinated against the coronavirus from March 2-4 in the 43 selected districts in Accra, Kumasi and the central region, data from the Ghana Health Service (GHS) shows.

The director of the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) program, Dr. Kwame Amponsah-Achiano, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview on Friday that since the start of the vaccination exercise last Tuesday, 16,563 adults over the age of 60 years and 8,313 people with outstanding health have been vaccinated against Covid-19.

Similarly, 891 people from frontline media, 963 special groups in national allocations, 2,535 teachers aged 50 and over, and 14,560 from the general population had also been vaccinated.

Dr Achino said that the vaccination exercise for the first target groups went smoothly and without major challenges.

“We hope that in the next few days we would have been able to complete the 570,000 doses that we have distributed for the first group,” he said and projected that the waste of vaccines would be minimal, although five percent of the 600,000 doses. of the available Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine had been destined as possible waste.

Dr Achino announced that the country had received an additional 50,000 doses of Covishield, the Oxford AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine, produced by the Government of India’s Serum Institute of India, free of charge.

He advised the public to become actively involved in the Covid-19 vaccination exercise saying, “The opportunity has come for us to return to our normal lives and we must take advantage of this advantage to get vaccinated against the coronavirus. When we have a critical mass of vaccinated people, we will interrupt transmission, Covid-19 will be a thing of the past, and life will return to normal. “

Dr. Achino encouraged the public to continue to adhere to the Covid-19 security protocols.

In total, a total of 20 million Ghanaians are expected to be vaccinated against the virus. Ghana, since the pandemic outbreak in March 2020, has recorded around 83,239 cases, 79, 465 recoveries, and 629 deaths.
