SALL Areas are my strength – Amewu | General news

[ad_1]

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Hohoe, John Peter Amewu, has stated that he would have had more votes if eligible voters in Santrokofi, Akpafu, Likpe and Lolobi (SALL) had participated in the 2020 parliamentary elections in the constituency.

“I would have been very happy if the people of SALL had voted because in 2004 and 2008, those were my strongholds. If they had voted, they would have even won with a larger margin, “he said.

Mr Amewu, who is the designated Minister for Railway Development, said this when he appeared before Parliament’s Appointments Committee last Wednesday.

Context

Eligible voters within SALL only participated in the presidential elections but could not vote in the parliamentary elections because a constituency had not been created for them.

Amewu won the seat with 26,952 votes in her third attempt to become Hohoe’s parliamentary representative, while her opponent for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Margaret Kweku, got 21,821 votes.

Sympathize

Responding to a wide range of questions, Mr. Amewu expressed his sympathy for the people of SALL for not participating in the parliamentary elections.

“I entered the elections as a player and not as a referee. I did not establish the rules that were in force for me to come to compete, ”he said.

Retract

Amewu also retracted death threats that he said were made jokingly against some MPs from the Volta region.

He explained that it was provoked when he made the threats during the dissolution of the Seventh Parliament on January 6, 2021.

He said he was booed by minority lawmakers upon reaching the chamber, adding that “I was received in a rather hostile way by the NDC MPs.”

“I thought that as a new member, having won a very difficult seat, I should be cheered only to get booed. [and called a thief.] That was actually, of course, jokingly, a trigger.

“I want to withdraw those words unconditionally. My constituency is watching me and, Mr. President, I am a peaceful man. The use of words came out as an exaggerated reaction which is my negative aspect ”, he affirmed.
