Last season’s Champions League winners are one step closer to defending their title
Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick admitted that his team took a “giant step” towards the quarter-finals after destroying Lazio in the first leg of the Champions League.
The reigning Champions League champs defeated Lazio 4-1 on Tuesday with goals from Robert Lewandowski, Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sane, as well as an own goal by Franceso Acerbi.
With the massive victory in the away game, Bayern have one foot in the next round as they look to continue the defense of their Champions League crown.
What did Flick have to say?
“Everyone met expectations, we had a very good team performance and everyone applied pressure,” he told Sky Sports.
“Everyone had the will to do something special from the beginning. The victory is well deserved. I am very happy. We took a giant step towards the quarterfinals.”
She had to impress
Having started just one game so far in 2021, Musiala shone for Bayern, scoring his second goal of the game.
With the likes of Thomas Muller, Serge Gnabry and Douglas Costa out, it was Musiala who stepped in and stepped forward, leaving Flick in awe.
“He’s very confident on the ball and plays well between the lines,” Flick said after the game. “He has a good feeling about the spaces he can or should occupy and he did a good job today together with the rest of the team.
“Of course the goal made us all happy so we are very satisfied. A deciding factor in why he played today was that we needed someone like him to keep possession, someone who could try to create overloads between the lines and in the middle. spaces and give pass options. He did well.
Next for Bayern
Bayern are currently at the top of the Bundesliga, holding a two-point lead over RB Leipzig and a seven-point lead over Wolfsburg, third.
Next is a meeting with Koln this weekend before Bayern host Borussia Dortmund at the Allianz Arena on March 6.
