Jamal Musiala became the youngest English scorer in the Champions League when champion Bayern Munich thrashed Lazio in the first leg of the round of 16 in Rome.
The 17-year-old finished smartly from outside the box to also become Bayern’s youngest goalscorer in the competition.
Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring with his 72nd goal to overtake Raúl as the tournament’s third top scorer.
Leroy Sané added a third and then forced an own goal, before Lazio responded through Joaquín Correa.
Bayern have accumulated six titles in the last nine months, but have lost points in their two Bundesliga games since winning the Club World Cup.
They were in full control in the first leg against Lazio, however, after Lewandowski pounced on a sloppy backward pass from Mateo Musacchio to surround Pepe Reina and slip into an empty net in the ninth minute.
The goal places him above former Real Madrid and Schalke striker Raúl in the Champions League scorers’ table, although he is still far behind Cristiano Ronaldo (134) and Lionel Messi (119).
Fifteen minutes later, Musiala, an England youth international who is also eligible to play for Germany, put up a quiet finish in the bottom corner to double Bayern’s lead.
In doing so, he surpassed Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who scored for Arsenal against Olympiakos in September 2011 at 18 years and 44 days, as the youngest English scorer in the competition.
Kingsley Coman then played with Lazio’s defense and when his shot was parried by Reina, former Manchester City winger Sane was available to score a third.
Sane’s dangerous delivery was turned into his own goal from close by Francesco Acerbi immediately after the break to nearly conclude Bayern’s progression to the quarter-finals.
Lazio, in their first round of 16 appearance for 21 years, found consolation when Correa smashed through Bayern’s defense for a clever solo goal.
Bayern host Lazio in the return leg on March 17.
