The Ashanti Region Police Command has arrested a member of the robber gang suspected of attacking and killing an ambulance driver in Asesewa, near Koforidua.
Martin Teye was arrested among the five suspects who robbed a bullion van at Asokwa Junction in the Adansi Fomena district in January 2021.
The thieves in the attack also killed the police officer escorting the van and took an amount of £ 500,000.
When updating the press on the attack on the bullion van, the Commander of the Regional Police, COP Akwasi Mensah Duku, pointed out that although the investigation indicates that 10 people were involved in the act, five are in custody and help the police with more research.
According to him, the suspects, Bismark Owusu Ansah alias Obese, 29 years old; Azumah Titus, 23 years old; Kofi Matthew alias Wisa, 24 years old; Kojo Agyapong alias Labista, 30 years old; and Martin Teye alias Kweku Darko 26 years old; He admitted to having committed the crime.
“Police intelligence discovered the identity of the suspects and arrested them in various hiding places, including Techiman in the eastern region of Bono, Kumasi and some were arrested in Kasoa in the central region,” he said.
The COP Mensah Duku further revealed that 53,934 and two Toyota Corolla vehicles were recovered from them.
In addition, they had invested the money obtained from the thefts in properties that included motorcycles, tricycles popularly known as Pragya and other commercial endeavors, which the police seized as evidence for prosecution.
“All five suspects admitted to committing the crime during questioning and said they acquired the aforementioned items from parts of the loot.”
The Commander also added that two of the suspects; Kofi Matthew and Martin Teye are already wanted by the Bono East Region Police Command for attacking a WESTEC Security Systems bullion van in Maapehia in Techiman – Sunyani on Friday, May 8, 2020.
Meanwhile, says the regional commander of Ashanti, his office has launched a manhunt for the 22-year-old John Appiah, popularly known as Omega.
According to the police, the SHS graduate has been identified as the leader of some theft incidents recorded in the Ashanti and East regions.
“Intelligence says that Omega is a very violent person and triggers happy and willing to kill his victim at the slightest provocation.
“He has also recruited other criminal gangs in other parts of the country and asks them to turn themselves over to fugitives when the need arises. That is why we need your help to arrest him, ”COP Duku appealed.
