The claim of the designated agriculture minister that Ghana has achieved food security has been discredited by farmer groups in the country.
Former Agriculture Minister Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, who is seeking approval to retain the post, told Parliament’s Appointment Committee during his background investigation last Friday that the country has had sufficient and secured food as a result of the initiative of Planting for Food and Jobs. by the Akufo-Addo administration.
In response to the comment, the general secretary of the General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU), Edward Kareweh, said the former minister’s claim is not factual.
“Ghana is not food secure. Only the rich can afford food, ”he told Francis Abban on the Morning Starr.
He also questioned the claim that the agricultural sector has created two million jobs in the last four years.
“The minister said that it has created more than 2 million jobs. I want to ask you that those who have benefited from the jobs, can they pay for food morning, noon and night with the income they are getting? ”.
Also commenting on the minister-designate’s statement, the Program Officer of the Peasant Farmers Association said that Ghana needs to do more to achieve food security.
“I do not agree with the minister that there is enough food on the market. I do not agree with that statement. For me, if we want to have safe food, we have to do more. Around this time, if there is a food shortage, what will happen when we get to May? ”.
