Eighty vulnerable young women around the Bui Dam enclave in the Banda district of the Bono region have received job training to improve their socio-economic livelihoods.

They included teenage mothers and pregnant women, who were taken through six weeks of intensive training in making prayer mats and bags.

The Bui Power Authority (BPA), the managers of the Bui hydroelectric power dam, funded the training.

The beneficiaries were among the identifiable Project Affected Persons (PAP) of the Dam, who were also supported with tools and work teams to establish their own businesses.

Emmanuel Kwame Addo, CEO of Matamiss Pottery, an Accra-based skills training company, said beneficiaries were able to make and sell 500 bags during the training period.

He said that there was already a market available for the prayer bags and mats, and recommended that beneficiaries apply the skills acquired to improve their lot.

He said that very soon his company would establish a ceramic factory in the area to create jobs for young people.

Mr. Wumbilla Salifu, BPA Director of General Services, explained that the training was part of the Authority’s Livelihood Empowerment Program (LEP Two), which aimed to improve the socio-economic livelihoods of affected people .

He congratulated the apprentices on their commitment and advised them to take the same seriousness into their work in order to improve their income and be able to care for themselves and their families.
