The Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDA) will work in collaboration with agencies that facilitate the implementation of flagship government initiatives to update the policy objectives.

Mr. Daniel Kwaku Botwe, Designated Minister for Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development, gave the assurances when he appeared before Parliament’s Appointments Committee for consideration.

He said flagship programs such as Sow for Food and Employment, Sow for Export and Rural Development, and One District, One Factory were built on improving local economies and it was imperative that MMDAs support their implementation to achieve the objectives of the policy. .

Botwe, also a Member of Parliament for Okere, said that if given the go-ahead, it will ensure a balanced and equitable distribution of resources across the country to prevent rural-urban migration.

The designated Minister of the Local Government assured that he is willing to guarantee full compliance with the land use regulations in the MMDA for orderly development.

Steps will also be taken to get rid of numerous illegal kiosks and structures located along roads and in communities that distort their beauty, he said.

Mr Botwe said that “Decentralization” was added to the portfolio of the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government as a strategy to update the central purpose of improving local governance at the grassroots level.

“Mr. President, when I am given the go-ahead, I will work for the pleasure of the President and I will always be guided by him to update his political objectives,” he said.

Botwe said traditional authorities play a crucial role in decision-making and development, and therefore would make them an integral part in solving complex governance challenges.

Sharing his views on the monetization of political party elections, he expressed the belief that state funding of political parties would go a long way toward ending the “unfortunate practice”.
