Concern Citizens of Site 19 in Tema Sunday marked Valentine’s Day, celebrated in Ghana as National Chocolate Day, a new impetus with labeled clean-up exercises; “Healthy-Healthy Environment Celebration”.
The Club was concerned about the bad environment: clogged gutters, stagnant water in the drains, garbage dumped along some streets and decided to clean up the communities to mark the day.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Brown Owusu, president of the club, said that sanitation was a major concern in the country and, as patriotic citizens, they decided to mark National Chocolate Day with a clean-up exercise.
He explained that with the active support of the Assembly and other corporate bodies in the community, the exercise would be a regular public activity for the club.
“This entire exercise is here to stay and will be held every weekend, as we will also participate in a community education campaign to ensure that citizens understand the need to contribute to a healthy environment,” said Owusu.
According to the Club, the only way to express love was to offer the person a healthy environment, hence “our commitment to undertake the exercise of cleaning the environment”.
Club members were joined by a contingent of youth who descended into the drains and sewers with rakes, shovels, brooms and other cleaning supplies to enthusiastically clean the air.
“We are going to install circuit cameras in a strategic location and anyone caught littering the area, especially merchants, will be arrested and handed over to the proper authorities to face due process of law,” he said.
