The Government of Ghana is spending more than $ 200 million to purchase the COVID-19 vaccine for the entire population.
Dr Franklin Asiedu-Bekoe, Director of Public Health for the Ghana Health Service (GHS), who said this in Accra on Thursday, said that the price of the currently available vaccine ranged from USD 4 to USD 20 and that would be the cost at which all Ghanaians would be vaccinated.
He told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that the first shipment of the vaccine would arrive in the country in late February.
“The goal is to vaccinate all Ghanaians and we are currently over $ 200 million,” he said.
The Director of Public Health said the Service was opting for readily available vaccines to ensure that the vaccination process is not lengthy.
A vaccine is a substance that is used to stimulate the production of antibodies and provide immunity against one or more diseases.
It is prepared from the causative agent of a disease; their products are treated to act as an antigen without inducing disease.
Experts say that it typically takes a few weeks for the body to develop immunity (protection against the virus that causes COVID-19) after vaccination, which means that it is possible for a person to become infected with the virus that causes COVID -19 just before or just after. vaccination and keep getting sick.
Based on existing knowledge about vaccines for other diseases and early data from clinical trials, experts believe that receiving a COVID-19 vaccine can also help prevent one from getting seriously ill even if they contract COVID-19.
By getting vaccinated, you can also protect the people around you, particularly those most at risk for serious illness from COVID-19.
