Defense Minister-designate Dominic Nitiwul says the Ghanaian Armed Forces are doing everything possible to encourage female participation in the Armed Forces.
According to him, although female participation is being promoted, to maintain the quality of the staff in the service, the hiring of women is done solely on merit and not out of favoritism or simply because they are women.
“It’s a field where you don’t want to play favorites, you want to make sure people rate on merit. So all the women you see today qualify on merit.
“But there is a gender office that we have established in the Ghanaian armed forces; But as I said, women are not recruited because they are women, no, they are recruited on the basis that they are qualified, they are exceptional and they have done well, ”she said.
She added that the recruitment of women into the Ghana Armed Forces exceeds the United Nations target of 15% of women serving in military contingents.
“Ghana has one of the highest in terms of numbers. I will not give in because there is a sensitivity to that question. In fact, we have exceeded the threshold of the UN ration in regards to both peacekeeping and people within the military. “
He affirmed that the Forces will continue to give women the percentages of recognition they deserve in the recruitment process to keep their numbers at an acceptable level.
“They do a lot of work and they do it very, very well when it comes to soldiering and I want to encourage them to continue to use the service,” he concluded.
