AshantiGold and Asante Kotoko failed to break through when Ashanti’s derby ended in a goalless draw at Obuasi Len clay sports stadium on Sunday.
The two teams entered the tie with 16 points each and a win for either team could have earned them a second place in the Ghana Premier League table.
AshantiGold goalkeeper Bailou Mohammed was called into action in the 9th minute. He denied an effort scored by the forward’s goal in the form of Kotoko, Kwame Opoku.
Bailou made another save in the 18th minute. This time, it came from Ismail Ganiyu’s attack.
The miners tried to make things happen in the first period, but it was Kotoko who seemed most likely to score.
In the second half, Ganiyu made a beautiful tackle on the other end, stopping a dangerous run by David Abagna in the 52nd minute.
The biggest chance of the game fell to Kwame Opoku in the 86th minute. His low shot missed the target after cleverly beating AshantiGold’s offside trap.
The last two battles between Ashanti’s regional teams have ended in goalless draws.
The Porcupine Warriors have yet to beat the Miners on the road since February 2017.
Kotoko ranks seventh on the record and AshantiGold two points above them.
Also on Sunday afternoon, WAFA produced a five-star performance to annihilate Liberty Professionals 5-0 at Sogakope. WAFA scored all of their goals in the second half.
Karela United remained at the top of the table with a 2-0 win over Medeama. After a sterile first half, Kwame Boateng and Diawise Taylor scored in the second half to secure three points for Karela to extend her lead at the top to two points.
Elsewhere in Accra, Legon Cities came out of relegation after securing a second straight win. They beat the region’s neighbors, Inter Allies, by a single goal from young Mathew Anim Cudjoe.
Aduana Stars and Ebusua Dwarfs tied 2-2. The same score was recorded in the match between Elmina Sharks and Dreams FC.
