Manchester City could be poised to snatch the Premier League trophy from Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp fears.
Jurgen Klopp fears that Manchester City “may run away” with the Premier League as Liverpool desperately fight to retain their title.
City beat Sheffield United 1-0 on Saturday to make it a club record of 12 straight wins., with eight victories in the top flight on the rebound, moving Pep Guardiola’s team seven points away from the champions.
The Reds, who ended a five-game winless losing streak in the league with an impressive 3-1 win at Tottenham on Thursday, head to West Ham in shape on Sunday and need a win to keep up the pressure.
It’s in stark contrast to last season, when Klopp’s charges roared clear to win the league by 18 points. In fact, with just a little over half the season, No team can exceed Liverpool’s 99 tally from the last term.
Klopp was asked if this could be the most exciting title race, with so many clubs in the mix, and if anything could be won with the fewest points, a Manchester United record after their 1996-97 win with 75 on the board.
But the German cautioned that Guardiola’s men look well prepared to regain the trophy, with his own team’s chances hampered by injuries.
“Will it be the most exciting meeting with different teams in and around? It could be, but City could also run away now. They are in a good position, playing good football again.” he said.
“I don’t know, I don’t know if it will be the least amount of points, I don’t even know how many points there are to get.
“What we see is that it is a difficult season for all the teams, maybe apart from West Ham and Leicester they also look pretty good.
“A lot of teams look good, but we all have our ups and downs during the season.
“It sure is a season where you have to be lucky with injuries, be really on top of things. More than in other years by the number of games in a specific period.
“But I can imagine that watching from the outside is really exciting, especially for a neutral fan. I don’t know who the champions will be at the end of the season. ”
Defensive injuries hit Liverpool hard
Liverpool lost influential Virgil van Dijk to a serious knee injury in the Merseyside derby in October, while his central defender partner Joe Gomez is likely to miss the rest of the season because he injured his kneecap in November.
Joel Matip’s fitness problems flared up again in the victory at the Spurs when he injured his ankle.
The Anfield club have had to use defensive midfielder Fabinho almost exclusively on defense this season, with captain Jordan Henderson also replacing the central defender.
