A former Anfield favorite still believes the Reds can retain their Premier League crown in May
Peter Crouch insists Liverpool are “still in the pursuit of the title” as he backs his former club to finish above Manchester United at the end of the season.
Liverpool were back in the top four after earning a 3-1 win at Tottenham on Thursday night.
The reigning Premier League champions had lost ground to arch rivals United and Manchester City after a five-game winless streak, but looked back at their best level of fluency against Spurs, with Roberto Firmino, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Sadio Mane all on the roster. .
The Reds are now four points behind the top-ranked City, having played one more game, and another crucial game against West Ham will be played next Sunday at the London Stadium.
United lost a chance to return to the top after losing 2-1 at home to Sheffield United in the middle of the week, having been considered favorites to dethrone Liverpool.
Crouch doesn’t think Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team can keep up with Jurgen Klopp’s men in the long run, and still believes the Premier League trophy could end up at Anfield for the second year in a row despite their recent struggles for the consistency.
“I believed it when they were still going through this rough patch. I made a little bet with Rio [Ferdinand] Last night. I still think that they will end up over United. I think they are still looking for the title, “said the former Reds forward. BT sport.
“I think they have some of the best players. I thought Henderson’s downfall at center back tonight was fantastic and, yeah, sometimes it will be a fight because Nat Phillips had to step in and I’m not sure what happened to Matip.
“They are definitely fighting in that area, but when you have the attacking talent that they have on display, you can’t discount them.”
Former United defender Ferdinand covered Liverpool’s latest win alongside Crouch and echoed his sentiments regarding the Merseyside team’s title credentials.
“‘Is your season over in terms of challenges?’ I think they have responded emphatically tonight, ‘he said of Klopp’s team.
“Yes, they gave them some gifts tonight, but you have to be there to take them. They punished this Spurs team and Liverpool will be there or there.
“When you have an attacking force like this, yes, they have had a little bump in form, a little drop in form in front of goal, but these guys have experience knowing how to be on top of the Premier League. “
