Roberto Firmino put Liverpool ahead with his fifth goal in his last six Premier League games against Spurs
Liverpool were back in impressive shape as the Premier League champions secured a convincing victory at Tottenham Hotspur.
After a five league game winless streak, four of them without a goal, Liverpool were back in the top four when they discovered their cutting edge style at the expense of an uninspiring Spurs.
Spurs, who lost captain Harry Kane to an ankle injury at halftime, had an early goal by Son Heung-min disallowed for offside before Liverpool’s threat was rewarded with their first league goal. in 482 minutes in first-half injury time when Roberto Firmino took advantage of the hesitation between Eric Dier and Hugo Lloris to intervene.
Lloris was again at fault two minutes after the break when he pushed Sadio Mane’s shot straight into the path of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who finished emphatically.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s 20-yard goal gave Spurs renewed hope almost immediately, but Liverpool was always in control and after Mohamed Salah saw a goal disallowed by VAR for handball against Firmino in preparation, Mane sneaked into the far post to jump on a Joe Rodon error to secure Liverpool’s victory.
Liverpool are now four points behind leaders Manchester City after having played one more match.

Liverpool beat the odds to counterattack
This was an outstanding result and performance for Liverpool in the face of further injury problems in central defense.
Fabinho, who has excelled in an unknown center-back role in the absence of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, was dismissed for what was described as a “minor muscle problem” while the frail Joel Matip lasted just 45 minutes.
It meant Liverpool’s central defensive association in the second half was captain Jordan Henderson and the inexperienced Nathaniel Phillips.
While that unlikely center-back pair managed well, it was at the other end that Liverpool returned to their best with Mane a constant threat, while Firmino and Salah were full of threat and creation.
His recent disappointing form has seen Liverpool slip into the Premier League and also exit the FA Cup in the fourth round at Manchester United, but the form of this display was an ominous warning that he discards the champions at his own risk.
Spurs flat, and Kane now has concerns
José Mourinho spent much of the second half yelling instructions at his Spurs players in an attempt to provoke a reaction, but to no avail as they produced a mediocre performance.
Liverpool always had a bigger threat once Son’s early finish for VAR was ruled out, but it was a moment of indecision between Dier and Lloris that opened the door for Firmino right at the end of the first half.
Then just after the break and despite Mourinho warning his players after the Spurs let Salah in for a shot, Alexander-Arnold scored to give Liverpool a two-goal lead moments later.
Son threatened occasionally at halftime, but even after Hojbjerg’s blockbuster from the edge of the box failed to inspire Spurs, who seemed lacking in ideas long before the final whistle.
The lack of threat was perhaps less surprising given the loss of Kane, who received treatment twice for blows to the ankle before finally succumbing to the second to his left ankle, which he held up to an innocuous challenge with Henderson.
Kane has a history of ankle problems and Mourinho will hope this is not another serious problem because, based on this evidence, his team will have a difficult time getting close to their best without his talisman and best shooter.
