Callum Hudson-Odoi revealed that he had never played as a winger before before being called upon by new boss Thomas Tuchel to play the role against the Wolves.
The 20-year-old started just three league games this season with former coach Frank Lampard, but played the full 90 minutes first on the right-back and then on the left as Tuchel began his reign as Chelsea manager with a goalless draw. .
Hudson-Odoi impressed throughout despite his unfamiliar surroundings, having had only one training session to learn what his new manager expected of him.
“It was the first time I tried it yesterday and I felt good playing with it, it was not a problem for me,” he told Chelsea’s official website.
“It was good trying to play in that position and no matter where the coach asks me to play, I will try to do my best.
‘(Tuchel) knows that all attacking players can be free and score goals and he wants us to be direct and continue to press and try to score goals and get assists. He told me to work up and down that line, to be direct and to stay as tall and wide as possible.
“I felt really fit throughout the game, I felt very strong, trying to be direct and reach my defender as much as possible, and I feel that as a group we did very well.”
Wednesday’s stalemate leaves Chelsea eighth in the table and with just two wins in their last nine Premier League games.
But Hudson-Odoi believes there are positives to last night’s performance, starting Sunday when the Blues host Burnley.
“I felt that it was a game that we deserved to win, we had the right mentality from the beginning,” he said.
“We work hard, trying to break their back as quickly as possible. Sometimes it was very difficult. When we were behind them they were recovering so well that it was hard to make that extra pass to break it.
“I think we have to be more clinical with our crossing and more clinical with our passing, the final product just to finish it. Hopefully we can improve it on Sunday. ‘
