Goosie Tanoh has said that despite the shortcomings of former President Jerry John Rawlings, he had a great love for humanity.
Mr. Tanoh said this manifested itself in a number of ways, including the fact that Mr. Rawlings “dedicated, and indeed repeatedly risked his life to realize a clear vision of Ghana’s potential.”
“You loved Ghana deeply: its people, its cultures and its physical beauty. You may not have expressed your views in classical / ideological “anti-imperialist” or “pan-Africanist” terms, but there was never any doubt about your love for all of Africa.
In a tribute to the late former president, Mr. Tanoh revealed that Jerry John Rawlings was ablaze with outrage at the effect slavery and colonialism had on the country and the resulting disrespect suffered by blacks, and that he was willing to take direct and often undiplomatic actions to fight back against prejudice.
He also noted that the founder of the Democratic National Congress (NDC) on many occasions made tough and often unpopular decisions to stabilize society and step back from the precipice of national disintegration and despair in the 1980s and 1990s.
“Were your calculations always correct and was the cost always acceptable? Of course, no. But we do know and can attest to a genuine desire for the most beneficial and lasting solutions to the myriad of problems we face as a nation and as a continent. In fact, his intensity and his frank speech often made those around him uncomfortable, ”Tanoh said.
“You were not immune to the contradictions, reversals and inconsistencies of balancing so many interests to create a way forward for Ghana and the continent. But it will never be forgotten that in an extremely dangerous period in the history of our countries, when the fires of societal anger raged uncontrollably, you kept Ghana intact. You kept Ghana whole, ”he added.
Speaking further, Mr. Tanoh stated that thanks to Mr. Rawlings’ efforts, Ghana, as a country, has enjoyed unprecedented peace and constitutional stability and has earned the respect of Ghana throughout the continent.
Highlighting his achievements in the country’s development, Goosie Tanoh noted that Rawlings was responsible for the democracy currently enjoyed in the country.
“We all live today in the state you established: the 4th Republic. And it is important to recognize how many of the elements of the 4th The republican constitutional formula were direct social democratic initiatives developed and tested through the practice of the PNDC. A few examples will suffice, ”he said.
“God knows you proved to be a successful nation builder, second only to Osagyefo in our history,” he added.
Goosie Tanoh’s eulogy comes amid activities marking the final funeral rites of former President Jerry John Rawlings that began on January 24, 2021.
Following Mr. Rawlings’ disappearance, the Funeral Planning Committee, the family, the Anlo Traditional Council, and other state agencies that assisted with the funeral arrangements released a funeral plan after a meeting was held to discuss the statesman’s funeral rites. .
A four-day plan was subsequently drawn up for the final funeral rites to take place.
Mr. Rawlings died on November 12 in the intensive care unit of the Korle-Bu University Hospital in Accra after a brief illness.
