The Ewe community in the Ashanti, Ahafo and Brong-East regions has suggested to the government that it institute commemorative conferences in honor of the late former President Flt. Jerry John Rawlings.

According to the Fellowship, the patriotism, commitment to duty and sense of discipline displayed by the late president, Ghana’s oldest leader, were worth emulating.

“We have many lessons to learn from his military adventurism and his later life as a democratically elected president and statesman,” Torgbiga Mawufeame Fugah, president of the community, told Ghana’s Kumasi news agency (GNA).

The late Flt. Lieutenant Rawlings, who rose to glory on Thursday, November 12, 2020, at the age of 73, took power twice in military coups (1979, 1981).

Despite this, he is seen as a driving force behind Ghana’s emergence as a stable democratic country, and is credited with having returned the country to constitutional rule in 1993 under the Fourth Republican Constitution.

His peaceful handover of power in 2001, after some twenty years in office, would set the tone for sustainable peace and successful transitions of successive elected governments in the country.

Former President Rawlings was well known for his strong belief in transparency, accountability and probity.

“You cannot talk about the journey we have made so far in Ghanaian politics without acknowledging our late president,” Torgbiga Fugah noted, saying that promising young people had a lot to learn from the country’s past.

He paid tribute to the late statesman for his selflessness and passion for national issues.

Meanwhile, the final three-day funeral rites (January 24-27) organized by the state for the late former president are taking place in Accra.

Some residents of Kumasi, in an interview with the GNA, expressed their condolences to the relatives and bereaved relatives of the late president, while paying tribute to him for paying his fees to the country.
