Hohoe Municipal Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Pius Mensah has said that the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic was a loss to the hospital’s human resources.
He said that some of the Hospital staff had been trained to help manage the disease, but some of them, including nurses, had retired, creating a gap, which would be difficult to fill immediately to handle the second wave. of COVID-19.
Dr. Mensah, speaking during a Public Health Emergency Committee meeting, said that despite the limitations, “we have to employ occasional staff to maintain two COVID-19 facilities; the waiting area and the treatment center.
He said there was a rapid response team, as well as protocols for the detection, handling and transport of samples, results and case management and community integration.
Dr. Mensah said there was a screening area for people entering the hospital, a waiting area for suspected cases, and a treatment center for positive cases.
He said that the anticipated challenges in the second wave of the disease in the Municipality were the absence of some equipment such as pulse oximeters, patient monitors, ventilators and oxygen cylinders at the Municipal Treatment Center.
Dr. Mensah noted that some positive cases were referred to Ho last year for treatment because the Municipality does not have the necessary equipment to handle such cases.
The medical superintendent said vehicles for daily operational work that included community education, contact tracing, and case transport and follow-ups were part of the logistics needed to effectively manage the disease in the municipality.
It was also discussed at the meeting that there was a need to provide televisions, refrigerators and freezers in the Municipal Treatment Center to provide some form of comfort to patients at the time of admission.
Mr. Andrews Teddy Ofori, Hohoe Municipal Executive Director (MCE), commended the health management team for handling pandemic cases effectively in the municipality.
He said that the second wave of the virus needed the services of the COVID-19 Fundraising Committee inaugurated to help in the handling of cases in the Municipality urging them to rise to the occasion.
The MCE also called on people and organizations to help the Municipality to manage the disease effectively.
The municipality of Hohoe, since January 16 of this year, has registered a total of 14 cases made up of 13 active cases and a recovery without death.
