Tom King was named to the Wales team for the first time in November 2019
Newport County goalkeeper Tom King has set a new world record for the longest goal scored in competitive soccer.
The 25-year-old scored when the Exiles drew 1-1 at Cheltenham Town on Tuesday.
His goal kick was picked up by the wind, hitting Robins goalkeeper Josh Griffiths before hitting the net.
Guinness World Records Confirm External Link King “officially broke the record for the longest goal scored in a competitive soccer game, covering an incredible distance of 96.01 m”.
Asmir Begovic previously held the world record for his effort in November 2013 with Stoke City against Southampton.
Begovic’s effort, measured at 91.9 m (301 ft 6 in), took until September 2014 to claim its place in the Guinness Book of World Records.
“Obviously I’m absolutely delighted because it’s not something I set out to do on purpose,” King said.
“I’m sure it will be talked about for a long time, so I’m proud and I’m sure my family will be very proud as well.
“I’ll have to text Asmir to send my condolences, but in all honesty, it’s different territory for me because it’s something I never dreamed of being in the books you get for Christmas every year.
“I hope I can read it if I get one for Christmas this year. I’m delighted and hope no one will get over it in a long time so I can show it to my grandchildren.”

King’s effort went viral on social media and he joked that he would bring a tape measure to Cheltenham.
But he says the camaraderie with a fellow goalkeeper prevented outlandish celebrations from his opener in the 1-1 draw.
“There was no celebration, I would never do that to another goalkeeper. I didn’t mean it and I think we have that kind of unwritten rule, that secret goalkeeping union that people talk about, so I would never do that.” King said.
“I would never celebrate, but I’m happy to help the team, really.”
