Martin Odegaard has been left out of the Real Madrid cup call to face the Alcoyano minnow amid suggestions that he wants to be allowed to go on loan this month.

The news will put a number of Premier League clubs on alert and raise further questions about Zinedine Zidane’s ability to nurture the Spanish club’s younger players.

Odegaard has started just three games for Madrid all season after returning from a very successful loan season at Real Sociedad last year.

At this point last season, Odegard had started 16 of Real Sociedad’s 18 games and was a leader in their initial push for a Champions League spot.

The Norwegian international was left out of Real Madrid’s squad for Wednesday’s cup game announced on Tuesday. He has struggled this season with a complaint of tendinitis in his right knee, but is believed to have trained without problems in preparation for the cup match.

He’s unhappy about the limited playing opportunities with Zidane, who has also relegated young midfielder Fede Valverde to the bench in recent weeks.

Both players are 22 years old and were expected to have a greater impact this season. Brazilian forwards Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo, both in their 20s, have also battled for minutes this season.

Real Sociedad has been linked to Odegaard, but the Basque club is not short of players in the position of the Norwegian who signed David Silva in the summer.

Madrid could also be reluctant to allow Odegaard to join another Spanish club for the remainder of the season.
