Tottenham is confident that Son Heung-min will sign a new contract of £ 200,000 per week once contract negotiations are resumed, according to reports.
Earlier this week, the Spurs temporarily shelved plans to offer Son and Harry Kane new and improved terms until they have a clearer picture of their financial situation amid the current coronavirus crisis.
With club revenues decimated by the pandemic, the decision to postpone contract negotiations will have been alarming for Spurs fans, who will be desperate to tie the duo to long-term contracts.
However, even with the talks currently on hold, the Spurs are confident that Son will extend his stay beyond 2023 and agree to a 25 per cent increase on his current weekly salary of £ 150,000, according to The Telegraph.
The report goes on to claim that negotiations between the two sides slowed down due to Son changing representatives.
However, ordering a new contract for both Kane and Son is said to be one of Daniel Levy’s top priorities as the Spurs president seeks to divert interest from Manchester City and Real Madrid.
The club’s finances have been hit hard by the continued shutdown of fans, having spent a billion pounds on its new stadium and posted losses of 63.9 million pounds over the last financial year.
The situation around the return of fans remains unclear with the UK once again mired in a lockdown amid a growing number of Covid-19 cases, making it difficult for clubs to plan ahead.
Son has underscored his importance to Spurs this season with impressive performances and helped the club reach the Carabao Cup final on Tuesday after scoring the second goal in the club’s 2-0 semi-final over Brentford.
New talks about an improved contract have also come as Son scored his 100th goal for the club in their 3-0 win over Leeds at the weekend.
The South Korean superstar has been in good shape this season, scoring 16 goals in 25 appearances and providing eight assists to his teammates.
Asked about Son’s contract last month, Mourinho said: ‘How can you sign a new contract with a player? You don’t know what will happen next season.
“You don’t know if you can offer the player a better contract than he has now. It’s a very strange moment. I only trust Sonny and Daniel Levy.
‘I know they both want him to stay, if possible, for life, if possible until the end of the race.
“I see Sonny signing a new contract here, but … I’m not pushing for something to happen right now because it’s probably not the right time.”
