Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo could be about to leave the club in this transfer window.
The 30-year-old has had myriad injury problems in recent years and has not played a game for the first team this season.
A transfer on loan to his local club in Argentina, Estudiantes, did not go as planned last January, as he only played one game before the lockout.
Both the club and the player were desperate to extend the loan until this season, but United refused as they wanted to sell Rojo before his contract expires in June.
But now another Argentine team, the country’s most successful club and current league leader, Boca Juniors, has started talks to sign the central defender.
“The bomb exploded this Monday afternoon when social networks were flooded with information that broke all the metrics: Marcos Rojo’s environment confirmed that there had already been contact,” reports the Argentine media Ole.
“His experience at Manchester United and in Europe (he was also at Spartak Moscow and Sporting Lisbon), added to the fact that he played two World Cups and three Americas Cups with the National Team, make him a difficult name to ignore.”
Red himself has recognized that [Boca’s director of football Juan Román] Riquelme had contacted him before he closed the negotiations with Estudiantes.
‘Marcos is a faithful admirer of Riquelme and even on his social networks he was seen wearing the blue and yellow shirt and the number 10 on the back with the name of Román.
And besides, Riquelme talks to him frequently, they speak quite regularly.
The question, the outlet admits, is whether Rojo will be able to join Boca this month. They indicate that the English media may be wrong in stating that Rojo would prefer to stay in England, where he has been linked to Newcastle and Sheffield United. Certainly, he is well informed that he put all the pressure he could on the Red Devils to allow him to stay in Estudiantes in June, where he felt settled with his wife Eugenia Lusardo and their three daughters.
The ball is clearly in United’s court. The club will try to get some cash for the player in this window, but it could be that they will be allowed to leave for Argentina at 11am if they cannot close a payment agreement elsewhere.
