Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Aaron Mike Ocquaye.

New Patriotic Party general secretary John Boadu has revealed that the PNP side of parliament has proposed that Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye remain as spokesman for Ghana’s eighth parliament.

According to Mr. Boadu, this decision approved by President-elect Akufo-Addo and the Party Council is not necessary to maintain consistency in Parliament in view of the current figures.

“We need to have someone who doesn’t create any kind of friction. We’ve seen some before in 2004, we had a situation where our speaker has changed and the accompanying bruhaha was not right, “John Boadu told JoyNews’ Latif Iddrisu.

His comments come after the question of who will be the next Speaker of Parliament has dominated the news headlines in the country.

It is rumored that names like Justice Dotse and Ayikoi Otoo could replace Professor Mike Ocquaye.

However, John Boadu revealed that the president, as the de facto head of the party, prefers to keep Professor Mike Oquaye as Speaker of Parliament for “continuity”.

The party is also making changes to some of its leaders in Parliament, although it maintains Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu as the majority leader, Effutu’s elected MP Alex Afenyo Markin will be the MP.

Additionally, Nsawam-Adoagyiri MP-elect Frank Annoh-Dompreh will be the party’s whip boss, while Ayawaso West Wuogon MP-elect and Tolon constituency MP will be his deputies.

Earlier, the Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Professor Stephen Adei, advised the PNP not to change the Speaker of Parliament.

According to him, there is too much “turbulence” at the moment for the PNP to bring in a new Speaker of Parliament.
