Following the recent departure of Diego Costa, Atlético de Madrid are suddenly looking for a new striker who can cover Luis Suárez and one option could be Real Sociedad’s Willian José.
Several names are being linked with Atleti, which until about a week ago did not think to enter the market.
According to Sky Sport Italia, Willian José, who has scored four goals in 19 games this season while competing with Alexander Isak for a starting position, is one of the possibilities that Atleti is most interested in.
Time will tell how serious that interest is, but it is likely that the Madrid club will favor a transfer with an option to buy, for economic reasons.
Atlético CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín has a long-standing relationship with his Real Sociedad counterpart Jokin Aperribay, which could prove to be a key factor.
Willian José has a contract in San Sebastián until 2024 and has been with La Real since 2016, despite being closely linked to a signing for Barcelona after scoring 15 goals in the 2017-18 LaLiga Santander season and 20 in all competitions.
The prospect of playing for a Champions League team may have resurfaced for the 29-year-old Brazilian.
