The Ghana Education Service (GES) has said that it is in talks with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to move the West Africa Secondary Certificate Examination 2021 (WASSCE) to September / October.
It has also recommended that the 2021 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) take place in November.
The general director of the GES, Professor Kwasi Opoku Amankwa, said that the proposal is to allow students to prepare properly for the exam.
“According to our arrangements, we expect the next exams to be written in September / October, and we have already started discussions with WAEC on that,” he said at a press conference in Accra on Monday, January 4, 2020.
He added: “We needed to anticipate the correction and publication of the exam results and the reopening, so if we decide in October / November it will be difficult for WAEC to publish the exam [results] early enough for admissions to take place in January. ”
“So based on our calculation, we have proposed September / October, and we note that when we used these dates, we would have covered 1,700 hours and we will only have a one-hour contact period that we can always compensate for.” added.
Professor Opoku Amankwa also expressed optimism that exit exam times would return to their normal dates for 2023.
“Looking ahead, WASSCE will take place in July / August and BECE in September for 2022. In 2023, WASSCE will return to our normal date which is May / June and then BECE will do the same,” he said.
