Gary Neville praises Manchester United’s seven ‘winners’ for keeping up with Liverpool

Gary Neville believes Manchester United can compete at the top of the Premier League because of their “match winners” after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side tied on points with champions Liverpool.

And United are facing a two-week probationary period, with Manchester City first in the Carabao Cup semi-final, Watford at home next in the FA Cup, before trips to Burnley and then a difficult trip to Anfield to face Liverpool.

And although Neville is excited to see Solskjaer’s team in the home of champions, but maintains that his old team is a “work in progress”.

“It was a great, great victory for United,” he said on The Gary Neville Podcast. “I’m looking forward to it [Liverpool game]. Not because I’m thinking United can go to Anfield and win, but because United has become competitive out of nowhere.

“If I had said at the beginning of the season, or even five weeks ago, that United would be at the level of Liverpool, I would have said that there is no possibility, that it cannot happen.

“That shows how unusual this season is. What Manchester United has are a lot of game winners: Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial, Daniel James, Mason Greenwood, Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford … Game changers.

“They do it in moments, and they don’t always have to be playing well when you have those players on the court. The performances are improving, it’s a work in progress, it’s not the finished item at all. Sometimes in games they hypnotize you during 10 minutes and then they can turn into a nightmare for 10 minutes.

“But there is self-confidence, something is growing, there is a spirit at the end of the game with the players celebrating that was nice to see.”
