Thiago Silva has revealed that he saw the dismissal of Thomas Tuchel from PSG coming while he was still at the club and the former captain has also endorsed the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino.
The Brazilian defender left Parc des Prince in summer to join Chelsea after Tuchel led him to the Ligue 1 title and the Champions League final.
The German was fired on Christmas Eve just hours after a 4-0 win over Strasbourg, and just four months after that narrow final loss to Bayern Munich.
But former captain Silva suggested that the players knew that ‘the situation had to change’ last season and showed his support for the appointment of former player Pochettino by sporting director Leonardo.
Silva told RMC: ‘Mauricio Pochettino did a good job with Tottenham, I think he’s very motivated, 20 years after playing for PSG. He knows the club a little. ‘
“Of course that has changed a lot, but he knows a lot about football, he will work with very high-level players. I’m still a PSG fan. ‘
The veteran added: ‘It’s difficult but it was predictable that this was going to happen. Not now, but being inside, we knew that there were situations that had to be changed. In my opinion, Leonardo took the situation in hand, made his decision.
‘We don’t know if it was good, it wasn’t at all for Tuchel and his squad, especially after the match (4-0 loss to Strasbourg). This change was not planned at this time. ‘
Former Tottenham manager Pochettino took over his first training session on Sunday since he was appointed the club’s new manager on an 18-month contract.
Like Tuchel and the PSG coaches before him, there will be pressure to hand over to the club the coveted Champions League that has so far alluded to them despite their heavy spending on players like Neymar and Kylian Mbappé.
In a statement upon taking office, Pochettino said: ‘I am really happy and honored to become the new Paris Saint-Germain manager. I want to thank the Club’s management for the trust they have placed in me.
As you know, this club has always had a special place in my heart. I have wonderful memories, especially of the unique atmosphere of the Parc des Princes. I return to the Club today with great ambition and humility, and I am looking forward to working with some of the most talented players in the world.
“This team has fantastic potential and my staff and I will do everything possible to achieve the best for Paris Saint-Germain in all competitions. We will also do our best to give our team the identity of combative and offensive play that Parisian fans have always loved. “
