Leicester City has a big transfer lead in Ben Chilwell’s search for Chelsea – James Rushton

Transfer sagas are often a hassle: Leicester City fans know this very well thanks to Manchester United’s desire to bring in James Maddison, a move that now seems to have vanished.

However, one of those sagas still exists, and it’s one that the Foxes will greatly benefit from.

Chelsea has been linked to a move for Ben Chilwell for a while now, as Frank Lampard seeks reinforcements for a weak link on his side. Marcos Alonso and Emerson are his only real options in the job, and the latter has been linked to a drift for a while.

Chilwell would be a natural fit for Chelsea, and that has been made clear. Former Blues midfielder Alan Hudson spoke of Lampard’s admiration for the player.

“I know Frank likes Chilwell,” said Hudson. Objective.

“He is a very good player and he will be a great addition, a player who loves to play and advance, which is what Frank loves.”

The ingredients of this saga are beauty, in fact. Chelsea needs a left back, Lampard admires Chilwell and the Foxes value Chilwell at around £ 80 million.

Now, they probably won’t get that fee, but they don’t actually need to sell, so if Chelsea wants Chilwell, they will need to spend the cash, allowing Leicester additional spending power to bring in a replacement.

This is where things get interesting, introducing a win-win saga for Leicester, which is not the only club involved in a massive merry-go-round that could start with a Chilwell move, or a preemptive transfer. Both Inter Milan and Atalanta could quickly become involved in a chain started by a Chilwell move, or a transfer that comes closer to home for La Dea.

The Foxes, and Chelsea, have been linked to a move for Atalanta’s left back, Robin Gosens, who at twenty-five is rapidly reaching his peak. For Leicester, Gosens would be a safety valve. He would make sure the Foxes are never ‘without’ if they are to lose Chilwell.

For Chelsea, it would be a cheaper option than Leicester’s left back, and it will allow the Foxes to hold on to Chilwell.

However, a sale should be considered at the right time to have the maximum impact. Too early or too late, and Leicester may be lost. In large part, however, it is win-win. Either there is money in the bank, or they cling to one of their most valued players.

While Chilwell does have some quality, there is a difference between him and players like Maddison and Jack Grealish of Aston Villa. They are both Manchester United’s target, and they are both talented players who exist in bubbles of their own making. While his position can be replaced, the player cannot, not really.

Chilwell? It could be replaced, not easily, not at all, but there is a huge streak of talent that Chelsea could provide Leicester City with the resource to mine.

If there is a club in the Premier League that can be trusted to make the right call on transfers, it is Leicester. The proof is in the current XI: Maddison, Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho are just a few examples of Leicester’s prowess in the market. The links to quality talent are also there, it doesn’t take much searching to find City gossip that links them to quality moves for a certain type of player, like Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer.

There is nothing to lose for the Foxes, and much to gain.
