After a disappointing start and a difficult December, Tottenham Hotspur have done enough to give themselves a shot at Premier League glory in 2021 as the New Year begins.
With roughly 60% of the current Premier League season ahead of them in 2021, Tottenham Hotspur is poised to have a shot. Although he maintained that success has been elusive, Spurs have at times been as good as anyone in the league this season. As Tottenham kick off the new year with Leeds United, fans should be excited as it is a year ending on a “1” and Spurs have a shot.
An opportunity for punchers in the Premier League
Tottenham Hotspur fans were able to enjoy an unknown couple of weeks in the Premier League first place during November 2020. However, a difficult December has left Spurs behind, but at a distance from the top of the table. It would be nice for fans to remember that both Manchester clubs always had a game in hand over Spurs when Tottenham was at the top of the table, so perhaps that placement was always tentative.
That said, Tottenham have a chance to make some noise in the Premier League. Despite the difficult streak, Tottenham still have a four-game winning streak during the season, equaled only by Villa and Everton (twice) this season. Additionally, the Spurs had a 10-game unbeaten streak, which has only been surpassed by Liverpool this season, which have not lost in 12 straight games.
Despite all that has been done to Manchester United’s current nine-unbeaten streak, they still have to overcome Aston Villa to match Tottenham’s streak from earlier this year. The point is that teams are racing, Everton has, Villa has, Spurs has, Southampton has, and United and Liverpool are currently in their own races.
If Tottenham can put together another race or two, they have a shot as it looks like no one is going to get the title like they have in recent seasons. As a reminder after 15 games last season, Tottenham was 23 points behind eventual champion Liverpool, who at 42 was 8 ahead of second-place Leicester City. With nine teams, including several with games in hand, within 7 points at the top of the table, the season is as open as any Premier League season in some time.
Of course, to seize the opportunity, Tottenham cannot be left behind and that starts with the number one priority, Leeds United. If we learned anything about Spurs at the start of this season, it’s that if Tottenham plays at their highest level, they can beat anyone in the league. However, they must play at that level, as their greatest enemy is themselves.
The good news is that despite a sharp turn towards the end of 2020, the Spurs have found that level enough to make 2021 special, because fans have to smile and look forward to what’s to come.
