Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that he left Anthony Martial against the Wolves on Tuesday, as he expected Edinson Cavani to be suspended in the New Year.
The Uruguayan forward begins a three-game suspension after accepting an FA charge in a social media post, making Martial one of four changes on the side that outpointed the Wolves with a winner in time of discount.
Fred and Scott McTominay return in midfield, while Luke Shaw replaces Alex Telles on left-back, and Solskjaer wants to see the energy on his United side against one of this season’s surprise packages.
“We rotate, we want energy, Scott and Fred have done very well, bringing those two is easy, Anthony was ready, that was a break for him, more or less we expected Edinson to come out, so having Anthony fresh was important” Solskjaer told MUTV.
Villa has made just one change from the team that drew at Chelsea on Monday and Dean Smith has kept the turnover to a minimum this season.
United’s late win against Wolves to end 2020 was a monotonous affair, but Solskjaer cautioned against the expectation of fireworks starting the New Year, despite having a chance to level Liverpool on points with a win.
“They are in very good shape, they keep going, they have players who are in good shape, you don’t see any weakness. It is a very difficult task ahead of us, but we want to attack with a positive mind, “said Solskjaer.
“You have to earn the right to find spaces, we have to play fast, we know they are good counterattacks. Can we stop them and fast forward ourselves? They are very fit, they are strong, compact, we will not create space if we play slowly. “
