Liverpool failed to score in a Premier League match for the first time this season
Newcastle United held Liverpool to a goalless Premier League draw at St James’ Park to ease the pressure on manager Steve Bruce.
Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah missed two key opportunities on either side of the half, while United’s Fabian Schar denied Sadio Mane a touch with a timely clearance from the goal line in the 80th minute.
Roberto Firmino also approached midway through the second period, missing the goal after Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow was stranded after a corner kick.
And the Brazilian forward then saw his header in the 88th minute magnificently denied by Darlow as the hosts held on to a well-earned point.
Newcastle points and performance
Newcastle boss Bruce came into this match under pressure, and his team’s style of play has come under fire in recent weeks.
The Magpies’ December had included just one Carabao Cup win and one loss to Championship Brentford.
And as expected, they sat down and defended in numbers, having just 27% possession in the first 45 minutes.
But they did have a chance – Returning to the starting lineup, Callum Wilson forced Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson to make a good save from a tight angle after 11 minutes.
And Ciaran Clark was also denied by the goalkeeper, Alisson flying to his left to avoid the defender’s header in the 79th minute.
Newcastle’s point owes a lot to 30-year-old Darlow, whose saving streak in the second half kept the league leaders at bay.
The tie takes Bruce’s side to 14th, four points from the top half, but more importantly, eight points from the bottom three.
More to follow.
