Manchester United will not receive Carabao Cup semi-final despite Covid outbreak at Manchester City
According to MEN, Manchester United will not receive a fine in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup against Manchester City on 6 January.
This after the Sky Blues reported a Covid outbreak in their team ahead of the Premier League tie against Everton. The match was eventually postponed to the great dismay of Everton.
Since then, the city has confirmed that its training ground will be closed for a period of time in an effort to slow the spread of the virus.
According to a statement issued by the club, the affected City players and staff will observe a period of self-isolation in accordance with the quarantine protocol of the Premier League and the UK government.
The difficult situation of City has put their next games against Chelsea and United in doubt. They were supposed to play blues the weekend before facing us next Wednesday.
Both games fall within the 10-day self-isolation period for anyone who tests positive. For now, it is unclear if the matches will take place.
This uncertainty is not in line with what Leyton Orient had to go through in the third round of the competition. The O’s were forced to lose the tie against Tottenham Hotspur following an outbreak of the virus at the club.
The EFL Cup laws state that the rule requiring clubs to withdraw from competition if they cannot comply with a match was only in effect until the fourth round. (h / t MEN)

The semifinal now looks likely to be played at a later date. Since we already have an additional Premier League game to accommodate, the addition of another match could lead to an extremely busy schedule in the new year.
Before entering the current season, it was known that Covid outbreaks could affect the football season. Given the situation, it is questionable why the rule requiring clubs to withdraw was not carried over beyond the fourth round.
