Adu Koranteng: NPP MPs must play an important role in selecting MMDCEs

To promote unity and development in governance, I believe it will be in the best interests of the Akufo-Addo-led government to allow members of parliament to play a role in the selection of the metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives (MMDCE).

Allowing Members of Parliament to select, endorse and recommend individuals for appointment as MMDCE in consultation with the party is the surest way to maintain unity and promote development in the New Patriotic Party (PNP) government.

I think this opinion is also held by some political analysts.

Furthermore, some elected MPs have accepted the fact that to deepen party unity and promote development in their constituencies, they must be consulted and their views sought in the selection process.

It has been an open secret that all appointed DCEs want to become members of Parliament, so they work out all modalities to make MPs unpopular in an attempt to win the hearts of constituents to overthrow their MPs during the primaries of the party.

Some intentionally delay projects in their districts when they are not on good terms with their MP only to blame them for being inefficient.

In the recently concluded 2020 general elections, many members of Parliament on the New Patriotic Party (PNP) ballot lost their seats due to some altercations they had with their MMDCE.

This could affect the fate of the match in 2024 if it is not handled professionally and technically.

In an attempt to stem unnecessary tensions and competition between MPs and MMDCEs, the party needs to allow parliamentarians to select or recommend people with whom they feel comfortable to be appointed as MMDCE.

They must be allowed to select their own people for appointment.

These will be people you can work with, people you are comfortable dealing with, and people who will not sabotage your work.

Again, the people they select will be people who will work with them to promote the development and progress of the party in the constituencies and constituencies.

In my interactions with some elected deputies, they indicated that when MMDCEs are appointed without consultation or approval, it does not promote unity in the party as the appointees feel they are not accountable.

It is for these reasons that the president, Nana Akufo-Addo and the PNP party must consider a new path for the election.
