Ghanaian midfielder feels the People’s Elephant can be inspired by his loss to the Sudanese giants
Enyimba midfielder Farouk Mohammed believes that the People’s Elephant Champions League 3-0 loss to Al-Merrikh was a good learning experience and suggests it could propel the team to a hot streak.
Saif Terry’s hat-trick proved too much for the two-time African champions in the first round, the first leg being played at Khartoum’s Al-Merrikh Stadium in Omdurman.
Although the chances of Enyimba going to the group stage are slim, the Ghanaian who captained the team in the absence of Austin Oladapo believes that if lessons are learned against the Sudanese giants, he could inspire the team to a hot run in both. the domestic and continental fronts.
“These kinds of results happen from time to time. Even the biggest teams sometimes suffer such defeats, but it’s about how you handle it, ”Mohammed told the Enyimba website.
“We are experienced players and we know that if we continue to believe in ourselves and not insist so much on it, it can motivate us to have a good streak.
“The coaches have been talking to us, advising us to be optimistic, and if all the players can handle it that way, then we can easily bounce back.”
Fatai Osho’s men kick off their 2020-21 Nigerian Professional Soccer League campaign with a home derby against Abia Warriors on Tuesday, and Mohammed wants his team to start building their balance from that duel.
“Abia Warriors is not an easy game but we have to start from there,” he added.
“We have to start building our confidence and win again because the league will be very competitive this season.”
Osho’s team must defeat Didier Gomes Da Rosa’s team by four goals in the second leg billed by Aba in 2021 to have a chance to advance to the group stage. Otherwise, they would be demoted to the Caf Confederation Cup.
In the previous decade, Enyimba enjoyed success on the continent after defeating Ismaily of Egypt to become the first Nigerian team to win the Caf Champions League before moving on to defend their title the following year.
