Arsenal are reportedly following Diego Costa’s situation at Atlético de Madrid closely with Mikel Arteta eager to sign the former Chelsea striker next month.
Costa’s contract in the Spanish capital ends in June 2021, but he is said to have instructed the Atlético hierarchy to terminate it six months earlier, according to reports in Spain.
AS Diario reports that Atlético does not want to sell to a direct rival and with Arsenal not participating in the Champions League, the interest in a transfer to the Emirates Stadium could be adapted to all parties.
Costa is said to want to stay in Europe, as he is convinced that he has ‘two or three seasons’ left at the highest level.
He has experience in the Premier League having spent three years with Arsenal’s rivals in London, Chelsea.
The 32-year-old has been plagued by injuries this season and has seen Luis Suárez and Joao Félix establish themselves as a potent attacking duo for Diego Simeone.
Costa has only made three substitute appearances in more than two months and scored just once since the start of the season.
Arsenal is seen as offering a ‘favorable situation’ for Costa and Atlético as they seek to reach a possible deal for him to leave his contract six months early.
Gunner chief Mikel Arteta is determined to add reinforcements in January to help save a campaign that threatens a battle for relegation.
Their failed forwards have managed just 15 Premier League goals this season, with Arsenal slipping in 15th place.
Costa won the Premier League title twice during his time at Stamford Bridge and even with his injury concerns, he would bring a winning mentality that is missing from Arteta’s team at this point.
The ability to move Costa into the January window would allow Simeone to make an attacking move of his own.
Reports in Spain say Napoli outcast Arkadiusz Milik, who has previously been linked to Tottenham and Everton, is their main target if Costa leaves.
