The national organizer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (PNP), Sammi Awuku, has urged supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to distrust the party’s decision to seek redress in the Supreme Court.

Sammi Awuku said that events during the proceedings in the Supreme Court could attract them to make certain comments that could cause problems for them.

In the 2012 election petition, Sammi Awuku, then the PNP’s deputy communications director, narrowly escaped the ire of the Court and was imprisoned for contempt.

However, the Court, chaired by Judge William Atuguba, prohibited Mr. Awuku, who had been attending the hearings, from going to court until the case was over.

In a strong decision, the judges noted with concern the steady decline in respect for the Supreme Court, which is the third arm of the government, and warned that if the practice is not stopped, it could create chaos in the country.

The Supreme Court also considered the admission of the crime by Mr. Awuku and his subsequent apology and petition for clemency, in addition to the statements of the main attorneys of the parties in the case, both in court and in public hearing.

Mr. Awuku, by order of the judges, remained in public hearing until they emerged from a prolonged meeting in the chambers, considering the possible punishment of slapping the PNP Deputy Director of Communications.

The then Deputy Director of Communications would have made unpleasant comments against the Court during a political program on Paz FM.

Sharing his experience on Monday on Onua TV’s 100 Degrees, hosted by Kwame Tutu, Mr. Awuku warned that “we should use Christmas to be calm while the NDC seeks redress in court.”

“I will share that experience with my friends who go to court. I will ask you to calm down because what happened to me, I’m sure some of your cameramen were there. I will urge you to behave so as not to fall on the wrong side of the law. “
