Chelsea needed a reaction in this game after a third loss in four on Saturday, but it was the visitors in form that started on a more positive note. However, the Blues eventually got into the game and started moving the ball for some purpose, the three forwards performed quite well and brought Chilwell into the game down the left with increasing regularity.
And it was precisely through that route that we would take the lead just after the half hour mark, with Giroud finishing well with his head on the near post of a Chilwell ball in.
However, the lead did not last long in the second half, with Villa taking advantage of a disorganized moment at the rear after Andreas Christensen was left behind after a step up and a failed interception and a meeting with Jack Grealish.
Chelsea responded quite well to the draw, and marked the pressure, and even had the ball in the back of the net again after a fight at the goal mouth from a corner, but Pulisic was (correct?) Called offside. In the initial effort he was removed from the line.
Chelsea kept looking for the draw, but never managed to create a revealing opportunity. Werner came close with a fumble shot, while Chilwell’s volley grazed the outside of the post in the closing minutes. Villa was quite happy with one point, and he even managed to hit the wood from 30 yards.
1-1.
Carefree.
- Six changes from the Arsenal debacle two days ago, including Andreas Christensen’s first appearance in months. (Only a few changes compared to the team that beat West Ham, however.)
- Werner for Giroud and Havertz for Jorginho the (attack) changes. Lampard uses only 2 of his 3 allowed substitutions.
- Giroud begins, Giroud marks. Is known.
- The quality of refereeing in the Premier League remains at the level of the Sunday league, at best.
- Still undefeated at home since Liverpool defeat, but only 4 points from our last 5 games.
- Chelsea up to sixth position, for now, but with at least one more game played than the other teams around us. In the middle of the table, actually, to close 2020.
- Next up: Manchester City on Sunday … maybe? City’s game against Everton today was postponed due to a COVID-19 outbreak in City, and it is unclear at this time how that could affect their upcoming matches.
